Stephanie Camille

Artist member since 2024
Toronto, GTA, ON

My name is Stephanie Camille, and I’m an artist based in the GTA. While I primarily work in oil painting, I’ve recently been exploring gouache for its rich textures and vibrant colors—particularly pinks, greens, and yellows, which deeply inspire me.

I hold an MFA from OCAD University, where my thesis focused on depictions of girlhood and hyperfemininity, reimagining high-femme identities as expressions of community, joy, and pride. As a biracial, disabled lesbian, my work examines the power of labels and identities in shaping belonging and self-understanding, inviting viewers to celebrate individuality and the connections that bring us together.

I work with gouache and oil paint, drawn to their challenging, unpredictable nature—each piece becomes a dialogue, sometimes an argument, with the medium. My process is intuitive and immediate; I complete each painting in one sitting, using my own photographs as references. I’m captivated by the “cute,” the “pretty,” and the “girly,” exploring their agency, power, and the joy found in small moments.

Living with chronic pain, I embrace “decor” and “embellishment” as acts of pride and love for my body. My work reflects my experiences as a high-femme lesbian, portraying how my intersecting identities shape and interact with my world.
